If you've ever stared into a red bowl of bubbling Shin Ramyun and thought, “This could be even better,” — this one’s for you.

We’re about to supercharge your humble pack of Shin with our house kimchi, a little fridge magic, and a whole lotta soul. This is not just a noodle soup. This is a late-night craving, a hangover cure, a “don’t talk to me, can't you see I’m busy” kind of bowl.

Why mess with a classic?

Because you can. And because kimchi makes everything better. Especially when it's cold outside and your soul needs warming from the inside out.

Here’s how to turn Shin Ramyun into something that tastes like it took hours (but takes 10 minutes, tops).

🥢 The Funky Fire Bowl - Recipe

🔥 Ingredients:

  • 1 pack Shin Ramyun (regular or Black, we won’t judge)

  • ½ cup of kimchi

  • 1 tsp of kimchi juice (don’t skip this)

  • ½ onion, sliced

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tsp sesame oil

  • A handful of baby spinach or bok choy

  • Optional toppings: spring onion, toasted sesame seeds, leftover roast chicken, corned beef cubes, tofu, etc.

🍜 Method:

  1. In a small pot, sauté the onion and kimchi in a splash of sesame oil until glossy and a bit caramelised.

  2. Add 550ml of water (or go wild and use chicken broth). Tip in the Shin soup base and flake packet.

  3. Bring to a boil. Add the noodles and cook for 1 minute.

  4. Drop in the greens and crack the egg straight into the pot. Don’t stir, close the lid. Let it poach gently in the spicy bath.

  5. Simmer for a few minutes until the noodles are chewy, the egg is just set, and everything smells illegal.

  6. Finish with a swirl of sesame oil and that splash of kimchi juice.

To serve:

Ladle into your biggest bowl. Top with whatever else you love: spring onions, crunchy seaweed, a dollop of gochujang, or last night’s braai leftovers. Eat while watching K-dramas or standing in your kitchen in pyjamas.

Why we love it:

It’s fast, funky, and fiery. It tastes like comfort with a bit of chaos. And best of all — it’s endlessly customisable.

Got a weird leftover in the fridge? Toss it in. Want it vegan? Skip the egg and go with tofu. Feel like crying and sweating at the same time? Add fresh bird's eye chillies.
